George M. Barnard papers, 1848-1891; bulk: 1861-1864.

Personal and military papers of George Middleton Barnard, Capt. of the 18th Massachusetts Regiment and Asst. Commissary of Muster for the 5th Corps, 1st Division of the Army of the Potomac. Personal papers include letters received from his father George Middleton, uncle James Munson, and sister Sarah Livingston Barnard, while living in Jamaica Plain, Mass., 1848, and working as an import merchant in Buenos Aires, 1859-60; and correspondence with his father, mother Susan Livingston, and brother Inman Barnard during the Civil War, 1861-64. Letters sent during the Civil War describe encampment at Hall's Hill outside Washington, D.C., Sept. 1861, the siege of Yorktown, Va., March 1862, 2nd battle of Bull Run in Virginia, 30 Aug. 1862, and the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia, 5 May 1864, among many other campaigns and skirmishes. Military papers include equipment and ammunition returns; papers from a court martial, 4 Dec. 1862; and muster rolls for Co. C of the 18th Mass. Regiment and 5th Corps, 1863-64. Collection also includes a letter received by Barnard from a former soldier under his command, 23 Nov. 1891.
